Unison helps launch Space Shuttle 'Discovery'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., December 10, 2006 - When NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery flight - [STS-116] - lifted off for the International Space Station last night, the third main engine on the space shuttle was brought to life by an ignition system manufactured by Unison Industries, an expert in aviation ignition systems.

Unison was tasked by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, the shuttle's engine manufacturer, to develop a Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) ignition system that was less costly to produce and maintain than its predecessor, while meeting all performance requirements. Unison responded by relocating the Ignition Exciter through the use of low-tension cabling that routes power from the exciter to three combustor-mounted step-up transformers, delivering 14kV spark discharges to the igniter plugs. By moving the exciter's solid-state circuitry to a remote and more benign environment, Unison's Exciter significantly enhances performance and reliability.

"Our experience with the space shuttle is another great example of how Unison applies its expertise in ignition systems to deliver solutions to its customers," said John Frus, Unison's vice president of research & development. "Our familiarity with engines in flight helped us to identify a great solution that will reduce overall wear and tear on the shuttle's ignition systems, improving their reliability and reducing maintenance costs."

This is the first shuttle flight powered by a rocket engine equipped with Unison's Ignition Exciters. Unison's Norwich, NY facility manufactured the Ignition Exciters, producing 14 ignition systems to retrofit all main engines on NASA's three remaining shuttle orbiters and for engine spares.
